What is Yik Yak and how are students on my campus using it?
Yik Yak is a location-based social network that helps users connect with the people right around them. By letting users express themselves, exchange thoughts, and explore their world, Yik Yak helps users feel at home within their local community. As a college administrator, keeping an eye on the type of conversations discussed on your campus' Yik Yak feed can be a great way to get instant, authentic feedback from your students about the local issues that matter to them in the moment.
What can I do if I see a user on my campus' feed threatening self-harm on Yik Yak?
If you see a post that indicates a user is in physical danger, please contact a local authority immediately. Be sure to capture a screenshot to share with them, and point them to the legal guidelines that they should follow for reaching out to us in an "emergency request" scenario.*
If you are concerned but don't think there is a threat of immediate physical harm, there are many ways that you can extend a helping hand – for example, by pointing the user to an organization like the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Many schools also choose to have peer counselors or others from the campus mental health center reply directly to a user, letting them know that you are interested, willing to listen, non-judgmental, and available to provide support. Please note that Yik Yak does not currently allow phone numbers in local feeds, so it's best to point a user to a website address from this list or to the name of a local resource.
*Please be aware that the federal Stored Communications Act, 18 U.S.C. § 2701 et seq., restricts Yik Yak’s disclosure of user account information without the lawful consent of the account holder or unless authorized by a properly issued warrant, court order, or subpoena. As a result, Yik Yak can only respond to requests for user account information that are received directly from a law enforcement agency pursuant to appropriate legal process.
How can I get assistance if I come across a profile that appears to be impersonating someone in our community?
